I Santillana, by invitation of the MAK

MAK - Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna

19 November 2014 - 29 March 2015

The exhibition I Santillana at the MAK, in Vienna, explores the glass works of Laura and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, heirs of the Venini family, combining tradition and innovation in dialogue with Viennese modernism.

The MAK in Vienna hosts I Santillana, an exhibition dedicated to the works of Laura and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, heirs of the Venini legacy. The exhibition features glass as an independent artistic medium, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary experimentation.
Laura de Santillana’s works include monumental sculptures and installations, such as the Buddha heads and glass ‘books’, that explore the interplay of colour and texture. Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, on the other hand, creates wall-mounted pieces and black mirrors, drawing inspiration from ancient glass and photographic techniques, to push the boundaries of the material.

Curated by Rainald Franz, the exhibition highlights the Santillanas’ artistic connections to Viennese modernism, with references to Josef Hoffmann and Carlo Scarpa. Their works engage in dialogue with the MAK’s permanent collection, emphasizing the expressive potential of glass.
