On a misty day in December 1960 a young American named Thomas Stearns arrived in Venice. After two years his glass works were exhibited at the 31st Biennale to represent Venini.

He returned to America in November 1962 to create his fibre sculptures, but the memory of those two years spent in the Venini furnace in Murano would remain with him for the rest of his life.
