For over thirty years, on the island of Murano, Berengo Studio has been a benchmark for contemporary art and glass experimentation. Published by Marsilio Arte and curated by the artistic duo Penzo+Fiore—Andrea Penzo and Cristina Fiore—the volume traces the history of Berengo Studio, highlighting its pioneering role in bringing Muranese tradition into dialogue with contemporary languages, in constant connection with the Venice Biennale and, since 2009, with the creation of the collateral event Glasstress, which is now a milestone for the crafting and exhibition of artist glass.
In this context, Berengo Studio stands out as a privileged space for meeting and collaboration between master glassmakers and artists from diverse research backgrounds. Founded in Murano in 1989 by Adriano Berengo, over the years the Studio has seen the collaboration of prominent figures on the international art scene, including Ai Weiwei, Tracey Emin, and Thomas Schütte, who have recognized glass as an expressive medium capable of transcending purely decorative dimensions, expanding expressive potential, and redefining the relationship between artisanal practices and contemporary artistic research.
Reflecting on the works and key figures who have made a significant contribution to the project, the publication documents the role of glass as a foundational material, capable of questioning the value of manual artistic production in the age of digitization. The reader is guided through the narrative by a rich iconographic apparatus, including images of the working processes usually hidden from the public, which form an integral part of the furnace's production system.
