"I have a deep passion for works of art [...] I feel these values intensely, and so they move me." These words by Carlo Scarpa, spoken in 1972 during the 36th Venice Biennale—the culmination of a fruitful relationship with the Venetian institution that began in the 1930s—offer a vital key to understanding his work. Over four decades of involvement at the Giardini, the arts became for the architect a constant source of inspiration for design, a tool for public education through exhibitions, and a ground for dialogue with artists. In these moments, Scarpa became an artist himself, skillfully shaping radiant gold leaf, marble and hard stones, solid iron, and the wondrous material of Murano glass.
