Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

05 November 2013 - 02 March 2014

Following its great success at LE STANZE DEL VETRO, the exhibition Carlo Scarpa. Venini 1932 – 1947 makes its way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with the new title Venetian Glass by Carlo Scarpa: The Venini Company, 1932 – 1947.

Venetian Glass by Carlo Scarpa: The Venini Company, 1932 – 1947 makes its way to the Metropolitan Museum of New York, after the success it achieved in Venice. It is the first exhibition ever showcased at the MET, entirely dedicated to glass, organised by Nicholas Cullinan and Mary Clare McKinley. The exhibition follows a chronological order, showcasing the techniques and compositions created by Carlo Scarpa for Venini, including the sommersi glass, the murrine romane, corrosi and a pennellate glass.

The exhibition’s itinerary commences in 1932, when Carlo Scarpa was appointed as artistic director, and it concludes in 1947, the year in which he decided to return to his principal passion: architecture. The exhibition retraces 15 years of collaboration, during which Scarpa experimented with colours, light, materials and traditional techniques, thus innovating glass design and making the Venini furnace renowned worldwide.

The exhibition set-up was accomplished with the collaboration of Venetian craftsmen, ensuring a creative and cultural continuity with Venice.
